HEALTH FAIRS IN PROGRESO AND MERIDA

They were very well support by the Local and State Governments. The Health Fairs in both venues were attended by approximately 3,500 plus people, who, otherwise would not have access to health care In Merida, all five Rotary Clubs participated. All levels of Government provided support this year by providing the location, advertising, posters and booths. It was a very professionally organized Fair. There were in excess of 20 booths e.g. abuse prevention, safe drinking water, organ donation, eye examination, dental care, breast examination, osteoporosis detection and many more. Most of the participants were provided with assistance and advice in a non threatening manner.

The ROTARY booths was named by Rotarians 2 from Alaska, 3 from Canada and local volunteers. As always, the Rotary Exchange students were present to assist with translations. Our booths were very well attended and the information on the hazards of smoking with a display of a demonstration of pig lungs ( one healthy and and one diseased). This was done by inflating the lungs with a pump and a comparison was made between the two ( healthy and diseased) Other demonstrations included breast examination with a kit and C.P.R. using our Annie mannequin. We also distributed gifts of toothpaste, toothbrushes, first aid kits, pencils, crayons and toys, which were generously donated by Rotarians in the District.

The Mayor of Progreso and the State Governor were in attendance at the respective Health Fairs. Our presence was well received by the show of flags, tee shirt and pins. It showed the local people that we have an interest in them, and that health care is a universal concern.

We were home hosted by the Rotarian families and were able to experience the culture.

The event was a great success and the Rotarians in Merida and Progreso hope to build on this experience. More Health Fairs will be taking place in Motul and Villaharmosa later this spring. Please contact me if you are interested in participating.
