Russian Health Fairs
One of the main priorities of National Project “Health” – is the safeguarding of Russian citizens’ well being and health. State government has made a lot of progress in that direction over the last 12 months. Still, there is a lot to be done and there’s work for everyone. Health Fairs organized by Rotary Club “Vladivostok Center” in cooperation with the specialists from the FERMC (Far East Regional Medical Center) have become an integral part of preserving and maintaining health of the people of the Far East since 2001. Fiji Rotarians make donation! - 12/03/2007
RC Suva East is donating $16,000 of blood sugar and cholesterol meters and test strips to the Fiji Ministry of Health on Monday, 3 December 2007. To use the occasion to highlight the incidence of diabetes and other NCDs in the Pacific Islands we have invited the coach of the Fiji Rugby 15's team to the presentation and to be tested. Ilivasi Tabua coached the side for the World Cup in France and the team made it to 9th place so Ili is very highly regarded and famous.

We feel he will grab the media attention for NCD's prevention that is so hard to achieve.

America’s Killer Diet - Fall 2007
Last month I was able to catch part of a series on CNN in which Dr. Sanja Gupta focused on the terrible health effects of the average American diet. Of particular interest was the widespread occurrence of Omega 6 fats in the form of soybean oil, and its harmful effects. Soybean oil is found in many processed foods such as salad dressings , baked goods, fast food, and frozen foods. In fact, by some accounts, soybean oil makes up 20% of all the calories Americans consume. One serious problem with Omega 6 fats is that they cancel out the positive effects of Omega 3 fats, which are good for our brain and heart health, and can be found in nuts and wild salmon. Some scientists link the increase in the consumption of Omega 6 fats to increases in heart disease, asthma, developmental disabilities, depression, bipolar disorder and even suicide (we have only been consuming Omega 6 fats since post WWII). The bottom line; eat less soybean oil and more fish oil for a healthier brain, body and spirit. You can find more information on Dr. Gupta’s work at cnn.com/CNN/Programs/siu/shows/fed.up/

Vladivostok Health Fair Center - 11/01/2007
Rotarian Evgenia Klokova reports that the Consuls are being changed this year in US Consulate and we are having a good relationship with the new staff. A new Consul General attended the Vlad Central Rotary meeting a couple of weeks ago.

Yesterday we took the wife of the Vice Consul, Kate Heyden ( she is RN), to the Hospital together with another Consul Lisa Walker. Kate will serve as a volunteer for a year in the Hospital and help us with our Health Fair Center. She has organized Health Fairs in the US. A training seminar for them was held in our Center and also they had a very productive meeting with Director Anatolii and the Hospital Administration.

Kate will be conducting lectures for the Doctors, nurses and Medical Students on a regular basis. The first lecture will be next Thursday
